How to Apply

Applications for the Fall 2017 will be accepted beginning October 1, 2016

  • Early Consideration: February 1, 2017
  • Application deadline:  April 1, 2017.  The deadline has been extended to May 15.
  • We encourage you to apply early as applications will be reviewed on an on-going basis and we will accept students through a rolling admissions process until the cohort is filled.

Cohorts will be accepted each year for the Fall semester only.

Applying to the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership is a two-part process:


Part One: Applying to the California State University (CSU)

Domestic Applicants: Apply online at CSU Mentor

International Applicants: In addition to applying online at CSU Mentor, international applicants must submit additional documents. Visit the Graduate Studies/International Applications website for complete details.

CSU Mentor Application

  1. You will be asked to choose between the Ed.D. with a concentration in P-12 education or the Ed.D. with a concentration in Community College education for your academic major:
    • 501541 - Ed.D with a P-12 concentration
    • 501542 - Ed.D. with a Community College concentration
  2. To complete the CSU Mentor application process, mail one set of official transcripts for every post-secondary institution you have attended to the SF State Graduate Division at the following address:

    Part Two: Applying to the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership Program

    To apply to the Ed.D. Program in Educational Leadership you will need to submit the following materials:

    1. Graduate Record Exam (GRE) results (current within the last 5 years)
      • Official scores can be submitted at the test center by selecting Institution Code 4684
      • If you have a hard copy of the official scores, it may be mailed to the Ed.D. program office along with your other application materials listed below.
    2. Form A: Personal Statement--This must be typed (1,000-word limit)
    3. Form B: Letter of Recommendation--You must submit three (3) letters of recommendation from employers or other individuals who can attest to your suitability for the program. Each letter should be on letterhead, signed and sent along with a signed completed Form B and placed in a sealed envelope with the recommeder's signature across the flap.
    4. Curriculum vitae or resume

    The above materials in Part Two should be emailed to edd@sfsu.edu or sent directly to the Ed.D. Admissions Office at the address below:

    If you are admitted into the program, you will also need to submit the following:

    1. Form C: Support Letter from Employer--this is only required once you have been admitted to the program and should be sent directly to the Ed.D. Admissions Office at the above address.
